Formation

Our method

The course unfolds in stages. In the first phase students take classes in the history of liturgical music and an introduction to music theory, gaining both historical and technical foundations.

  1. Foundations

Church history, the constitutive elements of music and score reading.

  2. Solfège and intonation

Solfège practice and intonation exercises, preparing students step by step.

  3. Liturgy

Singing at the liturgical celebrations, in the service of Holy Mass.

Our workbooks

Aware of how few courses in Brazil are devoted specifically to Gregorian chant — although it holds first place in the liturgy, as established by the third edition of the missal promulgated by the CNBB in 2023 — the Schola Cantorum Santa Teresinha decided to write its own study workbooks. Our material is carefully prepared to welcome and to form those who wish to devote themselves to this liturgical art.

Every student who joins our in-person courses receives a complete workbook, with hundreds of scores, explanations of basic music theory and a detailed history of the relationship between Gregorian chant and the Catholic Church over the last 500 years, grounded in various papal and conciliar documents. We soon plan to add solfège exercises to enrich our students' learning further.

We want ordinary people to be able to take part too, and to add to the beauty of the liturgy
